A workplace wellbeing audit investigates conditions of work and priorities for action, using employee experience alongside operational evidence. An engagement survey usually asks how people feel about their relationship with the organisation. The labels are not standardised: compare what a provider measures, how privacy is protected and what decisions the findings can support.
Frven Lim’s workplace wellbeing and culture audit is available online worldwide. This guide helps HR and People leaders frame the brief; it does not claim that a proprietary score is a clinical assessment or a legal compliance certificate.
Which question are you trying to answer?
If the question is whether employees feel connected to the organisation, an engagement survey may be a useful starting point. If the question is which working conditions need to change, an audit should examine those conditions and the organisation’s capacity to act. Neither label guarantees a useful result.
| Comparison | Engagement survey | Wellbeing audit |
|---|---|---|
| Typical starting question | How do employees relate to the organisation? | What pressures, resources and working conditions need attention? |
| Evidence to examine | Employee perceptions and engagement responses | Employee experience, workload patterns and relevant organisational records |
| Useful output | Themes and questions requiring follow-up | Priorities, limitations and an action brief with accountable owners |
| Main risk | Treating a headline score as the whole story | Collecting sensitive data without clear disclosure or a credible action plan |
What should a wellbeing audit measure?
The UK Health and Safety Executive’s Management Standards address six areas: demands, control, support, relationships, role and change. These offer a practical reference when discussing work-related stress. An audit should explain which areas it covers and which it does not.
Pair experience with context: hours and rotas, absence, turnover, team changes and patterns of demand. Use comparable periods and meaningful denominators rather than ranking small teams by raw counts. Do not ask for sensitive information simply because a questionnaire makes it easy to collect.
How should confidentiality be protected?
- Explain the purpose before collection, including whether participation and follow-up are voluntary.
- State whether responses are anonymous, confidential or named. These are different arrangements.
- Define who can access individual responses and who receives aggregate findings.
- Consider whether small groups or distinctive free-text answers could identify a person.
- Agree retention, access controls and an appropriate support or referral process.
Managers should not be promised named results under a questionnaire presented as anonymous. If individual follow-up is intended, disclose that clearly and agree the appropriate process before participation. Seek qualified data-protection advice where health information or other sensitive data is involved.
How is Hope/Hunger different from a validated assessment?
Hope/Hunger is Frven’s proprietary framework for reflecting on reported inspiration and pressure. Its role and limitations should be explained in the brief. It should not be presented as clinical diagnosis, proof of employee performance, or a substitute for a formal stress risk assessment. Ask any provider what evidence supports a score and what conclusions it cannot support.
How do findings become operational changes?
Name an executive sponsor and potential action owners before sending the questionnaire. Decide which changes could realistically follow: allocation of work, manager support, clearer roles or different recovery arrangements. The WHO guidelines on mental health at work provide an independent reference for considering organisational interventions.
For each recommendation, specify the responsible owner, resources, review date and evidence of progress. Tell employees what was heard, what will change and what cannot change yet. Repeating a survey without this feedback can create additional frustration.
Does a better score prove a return on investment?
No. A change in reported wellbeing can coincide with staffing, leadership, seasonality or wider business changes. Track the relevant outcomes, document the period and distinguish observation from a claim of causation. Do not promise lower absence, improved retention or profit on the strength of a questionnaire alone.
What should HR prepare before commissioning an audit?
Prepare the decision you need to make, existing comparable data, a disclosure and access plan, an executive sponsor and a realistic capacity to act. Read what HR should measure first, then discuss a scoped audit with Frven. Agree deliverables and fees before collection begins.
